What Is Android?
Android is one of the highly used mobile operating systems, which was developed by a group of developers and had it's initial release a decade ago, in 2008. It is based on a modified fork of the Linux kernel, has since been acquired by Google. They have been releasing iterations of the operating systems, which is developed for a wide range of peripherals, like Smartphones, Tablet/Phablets, smart tvs which run a fork of the Android Mobile OS specifically designed to deliver a more widescreen experience suited and engineered for TV. And also provides a dedicated sub-system for smartwatches which run their very own "WearOS".
Available in over 100 languages, it is a very widespread and popular operating system which stands as a direct contender for Apple's iOS. Software updates are delivered Over The Air. Google has it's own Product lines, this includes the Nexus and Pixel mobile smartphone family, while also sporting it's own virtual assistants such as Google Home and the likes.
Moving on to more technical aspects of the Android operating system, it sports a monolithic kernel type, and uses it's own packaging system "APK", which is usually distributed by Google Play, Android's very own app marketplace.
With support to many hardware architectures such as ARM, x86, x86-46, and expanding to support not only mobile and desktop grade platforms but also IOT applications, it is easily a versatile alternative for other linux based operating systems.
It is no doubt to realize that Android has been the best selling OS worldwide since 2011, and on tablets since 2013. According to a 2017 study, it has been noted that there are over 2 billion monthly active Android users, making it one of the largely stationed installed base of any operating system of it's kind. As of June 2018, it has been reported that, the Google Play Store has over 3 million apps.
Every major iteration of android was named in the alphabetical order, after a sugary treat or desert. "Cupcake", "Donut", "Eclair", "Froyo", "Gingerbread", "Jellybean", "Lollipop", "Marshmallow", "Nougat", "Oreo", and the recently released "Pie", which runs Android 9.0, are some of the major releases we have seen within the Android ecosystem
